Forum 6: Bunbury (South-West), 27th July 2015

“Overall a very interesting and informative forum. Highly recommended.”
Forum 6 Participant

Over 70 road transport industry guests joined representatives from Transafe WA, Main Roads, Department of Mines and Petroleum, Road Safety Commission, Department of Transport, Logistics Training Council and WAPOL for the 6th Transafe WA Road Transport Industry Safety Forum in Bunbury (for the South-West).

Passionate MP, Nola Marino, Federal Member for Forrest gave the opening address. Having grown up in a local transport family (the Catalanos), Nola’s passion for the sustainable growth of the industry within a burgeoning SW was felt by all those present. Nola emphasised the importance of educating drivers to share the roads safely with heavy vehicles, and the fact the road transport industry is underestimated in the eyes of the general public – “everything comes on the back of a truck”. Nola also voiced her ongoing commitment to the Bunbury Outer Ring Road and her concerns regarding recent costings of the project.

Nola acknowledged the work of local police and their challenge of working within a district that experiences regular fluctuations in population and variety of road users. District Traffic Coordinator for WAPOL, David Hurdle spoke further about traffic enforcement in the South-West and noted the unique situation in the district where especially during holidays and weekends there are suburban drivers not used to driving in the south-west alongside a large volume of trucks.

Paul Bond from Main Roads further updated the Transafe WA audience on compliance and offered his team’s resources to industry to further educate on, and dispel myths regarding, Chain of Responsibility compliance and enforcement.

Steve Mann from Newmont Boddington Gold (and also representing the South West Industry Road Safety Alliance) launched three new toolbox videos developed for industry and focusing on fatigue and driver distraction.

Mike Roberston, Engineering Director with Engistics gave two presentations explaining the ‘science’ behind truck rollover prevention and load restraint using an easy to understand delivery. Gary Wolstencroft, Senior Risk Engineer with Zurich Financial Services presented thought-provoking figures relating to workers compensation, and ideas for cost containment around this big expense for road transport business owners.

As always, Dr Nick Mabbott from Beyond Midnight had everyone alert with his clear and startling explanations of adenonsine build up and removal in our brains, and the contribution of this to fatigue and fatigue management.

The full day’s program left only a small amount of time for open discussion, but during this time the issue of heavy vehicle driver licensing and training was passionately debated by participants. Mark Mazza CEO of South-West Express spoke about the impact on his business, and Jillian Dielesen of the Logistics Training Council explained the progress of a newly formed safety and training alliance towards improvements in this area.
